Waterford has been making renowned crystal pieces for more than 200 years and has named many of its patterns after places in Ireland; Ballina is a town in Ireland's County Mayo, an area whose history is rich with tales of valiant women. The Ballina Collection was conceived as a celebration of the women of Ireland, using three symbolic motifs. First is the number three, symbolizing the town, the county, and the women who have lived there; there are three alternating bands of differing cuts encircling the vase, and the two outer bands are rings of triple wedge cuts. Secondly, there are the circular bands themselves, for the enduring continuity of history. And lastly, the field of diamond cuts denotes Irish women in terms of strength and sparkle. Even the contours of the vase are evocative of ancient goddess statues. The Ballina 7-inch vase is a good size for tulips, spray roses, smaller orchids, and other medium-stemmed flowers. The Ballina pattern includes a matching 7-inch bud vase as well as a 10-inch vase, a gorgeous compote dish, and a 6-inch bowl. To preserve its clarity, wash the vase with mild liquid soap and warm (not hot) water; do not wash in dishwasher as this may permanently etch surface of crystal. Rinse with warm water and polish with a lint-free cloth. Interior of vase should be cleaned by filling half-full with warm water, two tablespoons white vinegar, and 1/4 cup uncooked rice; swirl rice around for a few minutes to remove residue from inside of vase.
